Tricks of the Trade from Coffee Brewers

It is no secret that many people are particular about their coffee. In fact, there is a whole school of thought that focuses on producing expert coffee brewers. Here are a few hints that you may use to take your place among those hallowed individuals known as expert coffee brewers.

Most coffee brewers maintain that the quality of the coffee bean itself is the first major consideration if you want to produce a superior cup of coffee. For some brewers, there is no other place in the world to grow the right coffee beans than Brazil. Other brewers will swear that you are only wasting your time if you do not use one hundred percent Kona coffee from Hawaii. The uniting principle here is to make sure that you are using a base product that is going to help you brew excellent coffee.

Another point that most serious coffee brewers agree on is that grinding the coffee bean just before making the coffee is absolutely essential. Packaged coffee that has sat in the store for weeks on end simply will not do the trick. If you are not interested in grinding your beans at home, the next best choice is to purchase coffee at a store where you can select the beans you want and have them ground in the store. Another tip: do not buy a full pound. Buy only what you will use over the next two to three days. The flavor of the ground coffee will begin to deteriorate after that time, and you would be able to do just as well purchasing a brick of coffee from the supermarket.

Many coffee brewers say that a coffee press makes a much better cup of coffee than a drip maker. If you have never tried a press before, do not despair. They are actually very easy to use, and you can purchase models that will produce up to twelve cups of coffee. An added bonus is that some coffee presses are very elegant, which means you may feel comfortable having the press in use outside the kitchen.

Coffee brewers often have their own favorites when it comes to the type of bean and process whereby coffee is made. Do some experimenting on your own. Who knows? You may come up with your own unique twist that makes your coffee the envy of the neighborhood.

It's 10 am on a Thursday, and the line at Ritual Coffee Roasters in San Francisco snakes out the door. Inside, an espresso machine hisses like an angry tomcat as customers order their cappuccinos.
